Our mandate is to build and maintain a strong business area for the community, and promote the downtown area so that our businesses thrive and prosper. We do this through co-op advertising programs, by beautifying the town with upgraded light fixtures and streetscaping, by liaising with the Mayor, Peterborough City Council, and tourist organizations, and by sponsoring special events that bring people downtown and keep things hopping! The name Probus is an acronym for Pro(fessional) and Bus(iness) and has people from all walks of life as members. It has become so popular that along with the Peterborough Club and the Lakefield Club there are several Clubs throughout the Northumberland County area, as well as a Club in Lindsay. Probus Clubs worldwide are not service organizations and are non-sectarian and non-political, although members are largely active volunteers in many community organizations. Clubs are formed to provide social events and schedule speakers to keep members up to date with community issues and happenings. Many members have formed smaller interest groups for hobbies such as sports, entertainment, playing bridge, fishing, travel, computers, etc. There are currently two Probus Clubs operating in Peterborough County, the Peterborough & District Probus Club and the Lakefield & District Probus Club. Peterborough & District Probus ClubFounded in January 2001, by Charter President Rob Howard, the Peterborough & District Probus Club, in Ontario, Canada, now has 145 members and meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the Peterborough Naval Association. Annually there is a Barbecue in July, a Pot Luck Picnic in August, a Christmas Lunch in December and the most popular event, an Annual Car Rally held each October. Mailing address: Lakefield & District Probus ClubFounded in September 2007, following deliberations by an Ad Hoc Committee of the Peterborough & District Probus Club, the Lakefield Probus Club has 53 members and meets the third Wednesday of each month except August and December from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Canadian Legion, 95 Nicholls Street, Lakefield. The club received its Certificate of Accreditation from Probus Canada at is meeting on March 19, 2008. The club is now 196 in the Probus family. Mailing address: Peterborough Kinsman ClubKinsmen, Kinette and Kin clubs are the country?s largest all Canadian service groups, made up of active community volunteers. Members work together to serve the community?s greatest need by promoting service, fellowship, family values and national pride. The Kinsmen Club of Peterborough was formed April 17, 1930 by the District Executive, which was then in Toronto. The charter membership then was 18 members. Charter President was the late Alex Elliot MPP. We have chartered the Kinsmen Clubs of Kingston, Bancroft, Bobcaygeon and Lakefield. The K-40 Club was formed February 17th 1972 with Doug Moscrop as Charter President. Our meetings are held on every other Wednesday at the Rockhaven at 7:30 pm.
