Fundraiser: Maryam Monsef and Jessica Melnik present the 4th Annual Red Pashmina Campaign in Peterborough. Since 2009, this fundraising campaign has sold more than 1,500 red pashmina scarves and raised over $15,000 for initiatives for women and girls in Afghanistan, most recently through Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan. The red pashmina scarves are available in Peterborough at Tia Star, Le Joie de Vivre, Glow Maternity, Tango, Sympathy for the Rebel, My Left Breast, New Canadians Centre, and the YWCA. Fundraiser: Trent University Chinese Students' Association presents a Lushan Earthquake Fundraiser in Peterborough. Hundreds of people lost their lives and thousands lost their homes in the Lushan Earthquake on April 20, 2013 and the Trent University Chinese Students’ Association is doing what it can to help people in need. The magnitude 7 quake struck near Ya’an, in Sichuan Province, near one of the last reserves where pandas live in the wild. Several Trent students come from the region and feel it is important for the University and local communities to understand more about their home, and to join in reaching out to help with relief and reconstruction in the disaster area. Students will be at Trent’s Bata Library and other locations around campus, as well as at locations in the Peterborough community from May 13 to 26, collecting donations for the relief effort. All donations will be made through the Canadian Red Cross Peterborough Branch designated for Lushan County earthquake relief. Fundraiser: Ennismore Optimist Club presents Annual Golf Tournament at Tamarac Golf & Country Club (155 Ennis Rd., Ennismore, K0L 1T0). Our Optimist Club is composed of dynamic, motivated individuals who use their life skills to benefit their community’s needs, especially the needs of our youth. As creative people, we constantly seek innovative ways to help our neighbors. We create and implement programs specific to the needs of youth in our community and we organize fundraisers that will help the community’s youth. Sports: Heads Up for Inclusion presents "Amazing Race" at Nicholls Oval (725 Armour Road, Peterborough, K9H 1Z8). We are getting set to kick-off the summer with this amazing race. Students and members of the community will complete a series of fun challenges aimed at promoting inclusion in Peterborough. HUI is looking for students, organizations and businesses to form teams representing all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Community members and businesses are encouraged to help support teams through sponsorship and donations. Participants will work in teams of 4 to complete tasks and play games at various locations in downtown Peterborough. They'll be challenged to use teamwork to tackle barriers and obstacles to mobility around the city. The community can donate and cheer on their favourite teams at Nicholls Oval which will be race headquarters. Celebrate with a bbq and awards at the end of the day. Fundraiser: Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides presents "Purina Walk for Dog Guides" beginning at 9:30 a.m. in Millbrook. This national fundraising walk raises funds required to train Dog Guides and is held in communities across Canada. Dog Guides are used by Canadians with visual, hearing, medical or physical disabilities. Each Walk is organized by local volunteers with support from Lions Foundation of Canada. The Walks have collectively raised more than $9 million. Any one of us, now or in the future, could find ourselves seeking a Dog Guide; but would there be one available when we needed it′ It takes many resources to raise, train, and place a highly skilled Dog Guide. From learning basic house manners to honing the skills required of them in service, it costs up to $20,000 to achieve this goal. This includes transportation for our clients, as well as room and board while training for 2 to 4 weeks at the training school in Oakville. No one should be denied their independence. Fundraiser: Kawartha-Haliburton Children's Foundation presents "Be a Kid for a Day" from 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. at Camp Kawartha (1010 Birchview Rd, Lakefield, KOL 2H0). This is a fantastic event to raise funds to send kids at risk who are involved with the K-H Children's Aid Society to camp. You can put together a team of 8 people to compete in challenges such as Voyageur canoe races, high ropes, wall climbing and fire making. Fundraiser: Lupus Canada presents "Walk for Lupus" from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Millennium Park (Peterborough, K9J 4P6). Walk for Lupus is an international event that happens in May every year. World Lupus day is May 10th. Lupus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory condition that can affect any part of the body including skin, kidneys, heart, lungs and nervous system. It is one of the most common auto immune diseases(disease where the body attacks it's own immune system and tissue). On May 25th, Peterborough will host their inaugural Walk For Lupus at Millenium Park as we begin to raise awareness and fund for this unpredictable life long condition. Fundraiser: Lakefield Lions Club presents Fundraising BBQ for "Pedal for Hope" from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Lakefield Foodland (1 Queen St., Lakefield , K0L 2H0). Everyone is welcome to join us for a bbq in support of the Pedal for Hope campaign. There will be displays of soap box cars from the Ennismore Optimist Club promoting the 3rd Annual Soap Box Derby, Peterborough County OPP's Marine Safety Trailer will be present along with the new OPP Boston Whaler Patrol Vessel and members of the Pedal for Hope team. Fundraiser: YWCA Peterborough, Victoria & Haliburton presents Walk a Mile in Her Shoes beginning at noon at Peterborough City Hall (500 George St. N., Peterborough, K9H 3R9). When we launched this event in 2009 it got women and men talking about the prevalence of domestic abuse in our community and how they could help. In 2009, the event rallied the support of over 200 courageous men, bold enough to strut their stuff in red high heels to support women and children who faced violence in their homes. Since that time, nearly 500 men have walked a mile through the heart of Peterborough to show support and to raise awareness and funds. To date, over $135,000 has been raised to support the work of Crossroads Shelter and many courageous men have been walking tall ever since. This enthusiastic response to a local need means that women and their children will continue to have access to the safety and security of a women’s shelter, 24 hour crisis and support counselling and programs that provide longer-term support as their lives are rebuilt. Join us for this event that supports the programs and services offered by Kawartha Youth Help Service that help to make a difference in the lives of youth. Festival: Otonabee Conservation presents Second Annual "International Trails Day Festival" from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in Peterborough. Trails offer a wonderful way to explore nature through the urban and rural landscapes of Peterborough City and County. Communities throughout the region invite residents, their families & friends to celebrate our trails. This is an annual celebration to promote trail development, their use & the healthy lifestyle they encourage. The festivities are being organized by a committee including Otonabee Conservation, Rotary Club of Peterborough, trails enthusiasts (Cycling Dudes, Cycling Chicks, Biker Babes), Peterborough County, City of Peterborough, Township of Smith-Ennsimore-Lakefield, Peterborough Green-Up, Peterborough Cycling Club, Peterborough County-City Health Unit, and the Millbrook Valley Trails. Fundraiser: Muscular Dystrophy Canada, Peterborough Chapter presents Walk for Muscular Dystrophy beginning at 10 a.m. at Del Crary Park (100 George St. N., Peterborough, K9J 3G3). Peterborough will be moving its muscles to make an impact in the fight against muscular dystrophy. The community will be coming together to support thousands of children, teens and adults who are affected by neuromuscular disorders in Canada at the annual Peterborough Walk for Muscular Dystrophy. Taking part in the Peterborough event will be the 2013 Walk Ambassadors, the Vahey family, who understand the importance of this community event. "[We] raise funds so another parent or child does not have to go through this in the future," says Dave Vahey, whose son Michael was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at the age of four. Fundraiser: Canadian Star, Michael Burgess and Nexicom present 6th Annual Nexicom James Fund Golf Tournament beginning at noon at Kawartha Golf & Country Club (777 Clonsilla Ave., Peterborough , K9J 0B7). Join us for a great day of golf, music, fine food and most importantly, a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in the lives of families battling neuroblastoma. While some of the finest researchers in the world work towards finding a cure, families are on the front lines, trying to give their children the most life has to offer, while often struggling to cover mounting bills and every day expenses. For many of the families battling this deadly childhood cancer, the annual James Fund Golf Classic has been a beacon of hope. Money for hospital parking and travel expenses finds its way to families in need, and more than 300 participants have enjoyed time away at the James Fund Neuroblastoma Family Retreat, all through the support of this annual golf tournament. Peterborough's annual Dragon Boat Festival was quickly embraced by the community when it started in 2001 and has grown rapidly from about 34 community teams to more than 100 each year. Area 705 Roller Derby hosts a fun skate night open to all who can skate. Please bring your own skates (roller or inline). Helmets and protective gear is suggested. Fundraiser: Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre presents 3rd Annual "Men of Hope" Charity Golf Tournament at Quarry Golf Club (447 Tara Road, Ennismore, K0L 1T0). This event raises funds to support the Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre. The tournament features a performance from the world's most sought after Golf Entertainer Todd Keirstead from Golf with Attitude. You'll play with NHL Superstars and meet Heavyweight Boxing Legend George Chuvalo. There will be a chance to win a Victory Motorcycle from Deerehaven Farm and Garden or Sea Doo from Bay Marine. Following our "Small Craft Rendezvous" we will join host Nick Offerman to celebrate the 40th year of Bear Mountain Boats and Ted Moore. Nick Offerman has a wicked sense of humour and currently stars on NBC’s Parks and Recreation in the role of Ron Swanson. Nick will have you laughing with his thought provoking insights into the world of wood working and boat building. Proceeds from the dinner will go to the Canoe Museum. Cost: $40/person.
