Berry Picking: Pre-picked and pick-your-own berries at McLean Berry Farm (2191 16th Line, Buckhorn, K0L 2H0). Also home baking, homemade jams and more. Pick-your-own hours are generally 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. weekdays, and 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The farm expects to be open the week of the 17th and then pick your own starting June 24-27. Exhibition: Community Living Peterborough and the Canadian Canoe Museum present "Peterborough in Portrait, Our Inclusive Community" from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Canadian Canoe Museum (910 Monaghan Rd., Peterborough, K9J 5K4). This art exhibition will feature portraits of people living in Peterborough by people living in Peterborough. The inclusive exhibition will feature Peterborough's diverse culture, ethnicity, ability/disability, age, socio-economic standing and viewpoints. The opening will take place on June 16, 2013 at 1 p.m. This exhibition will act as Community Living Peterborough's gift to the Peterborough community for all of their support and recognition and will allow local artists to showcase their work without charge. Live Music: Market Hall presents Lindsay Barr - Album Release beginning at 8 p.m. at Market Hall (140 Charlotte St., Peterborough, K9H 7E8). Lindsay Barr based in Ontario, Canada unleashed her gritty, raspy, charismatic stage presence and smokin' vocals on the Canadian Idol stage, as an accredited top 20 finalist. Barr has garnered opening slots at premiere events for Sam Roberts, Colin James and Our Lady Peace, as well as, showcasing at Canadian Music Week, NXNE, Nashville Songwriters Festival and performed at the Smiths Falls Canal Railway Festival. The East Coast Music Awards (ECMA) nominee Barr, was named song writer and vocalist of the year at the "Dobro Awards" and the 2012 Female Vocalist of the Year at the Wire Awards. Lindsay Barr is releasing her upcoming Rock/Blues/Alt Country infused album to be produced by Adam Newcomb (Gentlemen Husbands, Western Avenue, Sacha, Cheryl Dunn). Fundraiser: Madeline presents "Madeline's Lemonade Stand" from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Millennium Park (Peterborough, K9J 4P6). Eight-year-old Madeline is hosting her lemonade stand for the 4th year in a row. She will be selling lemonade, baked goods, candy and she will also have raffle prizes and silent auction items. We heard a rumour that there might be a Peterborough Lakers Lacrosse Jersey, signed by the players, available for the silent auction. Madeline's goal is to raise $500 for the Sick Kids Foundation. Lecture: Lakefield Literary Festival presents "Idle No More: Looking Back, Moving Ahead" beginning at 8 p.m. at Bryan Jones Theatre, Lakefield College School (4391 County Rd. 29, Lakefield, K0L 2H0). Celebrated local author/host and Festival friend, Drew Hayden Taylor opens this year’s Festival by introducing two of Canada’s pre-eminent authors. Lee Maracle is a prolific author and recognized authority on Aboriginal culture and history. Her latest novel, First Wives Club: Coast Salish Style, is a heart-warming collection of short stories exploring the experiences of an Indigenous woman, a university professor, an activist and a single mother. Thomas King is renowned as a writer, educator, activist and humorist. His new book, The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America, is described by The Globe and Mail as “'history' and the complete subversion of history… a critical and personal meditation that the remarkable Thomas King has conducted over the past 50 years about what it means to be “Indian”. Lecture: Lakefield Literary Festival presents "Stories about Storytellers" beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Bryan Jones Theatre, Lakefield College School (4391 County Rd. 29, Lakefield, K0L 2H0). Join host & Trent University teacher, Lewis MacLeod, as we greet a giant in the Canadian publishing world, Douglas Gibson and many famous Canadian authors. The one-man show based on his most recent book, Stories About Storytellers: Publishing Alice Munro, Robertson Davies, Alistair MacLeod, Pierre Trudeau and Others, has Douglas telling stories about the authors he got to know well in the course of his amazing career as their Editor and Publisher. Each of the 21 authors he discusses at length appears on a central screen behind him in a lively caricature specially created by the mischievous Tony Jenkins of The Globe & Mail. Over 40 versions of the unique show have been given in 8 provinces across Canada since October 2011 producing reactions such as “hilarious”, “moving” and “entertaining and informative.” This presentation could only come from someone who has had a long, fascinating career working behind the scenes with some of the most memorable literary men and women of our era. Fundraiser: United Way Peterborough & District presents "Paint the Town Red" from 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. in Peterborough. The United Way helps those in need in our community and draws the non-profit community together in a cohesive way, bringing us together to think strategically about our community. For that, we are thankful. To show our gratitude and support, many downtown restaurants, pubs and cafs will give 25% of their net sales to United Way Peterborough & District, some for the full day, and some for specific time periods. So far, the committed restaurants are: Shish-Kabob Hut, St. Veronus, Sam's Place, Black Honey Dessert and Coffeehouse, Silver Bean Caf, The Sapphire Room, Natas Caf, Peterborough Eats and La Hacienda Mexican Restaurant.
